Ka ʻAha Hula ʻO Hālauaola Hula Conference, July 13 – 18, 2014 at Kauaʻi
The island of Kaua’i was the setting for the 2014 Ka ‘Aha Hula o Hālauaola Hula Conference. Kumu Hula Iwalani Kalima and her hālau members spent a week immersed in the spiritual awakening of the Hawaiian culture through all aspects of hula, including huaka’i to kōkua and mālama the ‘āina. Kumu Iwalani taught a workshop, “The Basic Beats and Rhythms to the Ipuheke,” that had students from the U.S. mainland, Europe, Asia and Hawai’i all eager to learn. She also taught a hula workshop during which she taught “Poliahu I Ke Kapu” and as a special treat, the haku mele, Hawane Rios, stopped in to share her mana’o about her composition. Kumu Iwalani and her halau look forward to having the hula conference return to the Island of Hawai’i in 2018!
